Designing the Viral App

Over the last three years, I’ve been working on understanding social collaborative behavior, and in particular at LinkedIn, Viral Loops. Interaction design is key to an applications ability to promote itself. In this short session, I’ll focus on the critical comments of defaults, sharing mechanisms, updates, notifications and even SEO as holistic elements of a viral system that is currently driving the popularity of social networks and social media successes everywhere. I’ll talk about the underpinnings needed to devise a successful social system as well, touching on identity, reputation and relationships in digital communities.

Currently, Christina Wodtke is principal product manager of something secret at LinkedIn. A relentless instigator, Christina founded Cucina Media to help little publishers compete with the big boys. Previously, she cofounded The Management Innovation Group (mig5.com), devoted to making companies more humane. She also founded Boxes and Arrows, an online magazine of design; founded the Institute of Information Architecture; wrote the bestselling “Information Architecture: Blueprints for the Web”; and has spoken on the topic of the human experience in information spaces at conferences worldwide.
Prior to founding MIG, Christina was director of design for Yahoo! Search and Marketplace where she led design work in the revival of Search, and the reinvention of Shopping.
